What is Terabyte?

A Terabyte is a unit of digital data that is equal to about 1 trillion bytes. In a metric system, a terabyte is exactly 1 trillion bytes and in a binary system or notation, a terabyte is 240 bytes, 1,099,511,627,776 bytes or 10244 bytes. A terabyte is made up of many bytes which store the digital information and denotes data size. A byte is a size which is made up of 8 bits.

The binary system is expressed in the form of power of two and thus 1Terabyte is expressed as 240 bytes. While in the metric system 1 Terabyte is equivalent to one trillion bytes.

1TB = 1012 Bytes

1TB = 1000GB

Terabyte History

In the early 1950s computing, storage capacities were measured in kilobytes (KB) and megabytes (MB). In 1956 IBM introduced the first hard disk drive (HDD), the IBM 305 RAMAC, which had a storage capacity of 5 megabytes but far from the terabyte range. The IBM 1301 Disk storage was further introduced having 28 MB storage.

In 1970s the IBM 3330 subsystem was built storing 100 MB it was a milestone in the storage capacity devices. The introduction of personal computer gained popularity in the early 1980s and need for storage increased during this time IBM introduced IBM3380 Storage Device storing up to 2.5GB.

In 1990 the digital data saw sudden rise especially multimedia files the need for larger storage units.The term terabyte started being used in the late 1990s the devices and high end servers began approaching terabyte level storage capacity. Advances in HDD technology allowed for the production of terabyte level drives.

In early 2000s Hitachi released the first 1 terabyte hard drive for consumer use.The digitisation and rise of high-definition and video large-scale database pushed the demand for terabyte storage even further. The development and affordability of solid-state drives (SSDs).

In 2010 further expanded storage capabilities. SSDs offered faster data access speeds compared to traditional HDDs. In 2012 Western Digital Ultrastar He10 was introduced having the highest capacity of storage to be known of 10 TB. Now at present we have diggerent devices and cloud storage to store a terabyte of data.

The Cost of a Terabyte

The cost per terabyte is quite less as compared to early days , the HDDs cost has decreased over the time. When Introduced the IBM 350 RAMAC costed $35,000 to store 5MB of data. Sandisk 2GB microSD card costed $99 in 2006. The Hitachi deskstar 7K1000 first device to achieve capacity of 1TB in 2007 costed $399 at that time.

Nowadays the internal HDDs range from $30 to $50 (₹2500 – ₹6000)depending on brand and performance of hard disk drive external HDDs range from $40 to $80 (₹3500 – ₹9000)depending on brand, features like portability and quality of the product. The price of SSD is more than HDD but SSDs offer faster data access speeds compared to Hard disk drive. Internal SSD ranges from $80 to $150 for 1TB, with higher-end models offering better performance and durability costing more.

The cloud service storage provide with yearly ,quarterly and monthly plans different cloud space have different data plans like google drive and dropbox have same plans that are around $10 per month and $99.99 per year, Onedrive has little less price point then drive it has $69.99 per year for 1TB.

Over the past decade the price of storage has significantly decreased due to advancement of technology and increased production

Major Vendors Having Terabyte Storage

Several major vendors provide terabyte-level storage solutions:

  • Western Digital
  • Seagate
  • Tosiba
  • Sandisk
  • Intel
  • Cloud services like Google drive and dropbox

Conclusion

The terabyte (TB) has become a fundamental unit of digital storage in our increasingly data-driven world. Over the past few decades, the evolution of storage technology has brought terabyte-level capacity from high-end enterprise systems to everyday consumer devices. Terabyte storage solutions are now accessible and affordable for a wide range of applications. Understanding the importance and applications of terabyte storage can help users make informed decisions and effectively manage their data in an ever-expanding digital landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions on Terabyte – FAQs

What are the best uses for terabyte storage?

It is used for storing large files of photos, videos, music, and documents, also used to enhance performance in gaming or high performance tasks.

How much data can a terabyte hold?

A terabyte can hold roughly about 500 hours of HD videoAbout 6.5 million document pages (at 150 KB each) and approximately 250,000 photos (at 4 MB each) and around 250 movies (at 4 GB each).

What are the common types of terabyte storage devices?

Hard Disk Drives (HDDs),Solid-State Drives (SSDs),Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices connected to a network for shared access and cloud Storage services.
