Torque is a product of force (Newton) and perpendicular distance (meter) of the line of force from the axis. It is represented by the symbol τ (tau), which is a measure of the rotational force applied to an object. It is the product of the force applied and the distance from the axis of rotation to the point where the force is applied. Mathematically, torque is expressed as:

τ = F x r

Where:

  • τ (tau) is the torque,
  • F is the force applied, and
  • r is the distance from the axis of rotation to the point where the force is applied.

The unit of force, in the SI system, is the Newton (N), and the unit of distance is the meter (m). Therefore, the unit of torque, when force is in Newtons and distance is in meters, becomes Newton-meter (N·m).
