It is an electronic device used in communication like telecommunication in hardware and electronics to determine or calculate the value of the quality factor of the electrical system. It is also used in electric capacitors to measure the value of capacitance and in inductors to calculate the value of inductance. It works and runs on the principle of resonance. When the circuit is in the condition of resonance, the circuit’s impedance becomes resistive. It also measures or calculates the reactance of many unknown circuits by using the known reactance. It is also known as the Quality Factor Meter. Table of Content What is Q Meter? The Q Meter or Quality Factor Meter is the electronic device used to calculate or measure the value of quality factors in many telecommunications, hardware, and electric engineering. This meter is based on the principle of resonance. It becomes sensitive in resonance conditions. The quality factor is the parameter that shows the relation between the storage energy and the dissipated energy. It measures the total energy dissipated by it. In the laboratory, it is used for the testing of the radiofrequency of the coils. Formula of Quality FactorBy using Q meter to find the Quality Factor by using this formula given below:
where:
Formula for Q MeterHere the formula for Q meter:
Where: Q = Storage Factor L = Inductance R = Resistance ω0 = Frequency at Resonance Components of Q MeterHere are the common components of Q Meter:
Q Meter CircuitThe Q meter works on the principle of resonant. When the reactance ,inductance and capacitance of the circuit are of same value or magnitude, this condition of circuit is said to resonant. It also based on the behavior of these electrical components capacitor, inductor and resistor of the resonant circuit. In above diagram we can see that capacitance(C), inductance(L) and reactance(R) all connected in the series and make LCR series circuit. ![]() Q Meter Circuit The capacitor and tunable oscillator are set with correct frequency for obtaining the peak value of E0. Now, the value of quality factor is given as:
By using voltmeter we calculate the quality factor and voltmeter is connected to the capacitor. This is the value of Q for whole circuit. Similarly by using the circuit of Q meter we measured the value of inductance, effective resistance, capacitance and self capacitance.
Working Principle of Q MeterThe basic working principle of Q meter is the series resonant that means the condition which exists in the circuit – the inductance and the capacitance reactance are equal in magnitude and induces the energy between their electric and magnetic field respectively. Mainly it depends on the features of some components: capacitance, inductance , resistance in the series circuit. ![]() Q Meter Circuit At resonant frequency: capacitance = inductance
The value of XC and XL = 1/2πƒ0 Now the value of current at resonant frequency
where: V or E = Incoming Voltage R = Reactance The voltage E across the capacitor is given as: EC = I0 X0 = I0 X0 = I0 ωo L Input Voltage EC = I0 R EC/E = I0 ω0 L/I0 R EC/E = ω0 L/R
At resonant frequency, the incoming voltage E or V is Q times the voltage passes across the capacitor.
Now, we calculate the value of quality factor by attaching voltmeter across capacitor. Applications of Q Meter
ConclusionQ meter is an important and useful electronic device used to calculate the quality factor as well as determine the accuracy, power as well as performance of various electrical circuits. The common components of q meter are meter, detector, tunable oscillator, q scale, coil and capacitor. It works on the principle of resonant frequency to measure the current and voltage which helps us in calculating the quality factor as well as performance.
