History of Books Written by Marco Polo

Marco Polo and Rustichello da Pisa are both known for their collective efforts in writing some of the most famous books about the travels of Marco Polo. During the thirteenth century, Venice was in a war with Genoa which is why Marco Polo was imprisoned. There he met Rustichello da Pisa where two of them together started to frame stories and write books. Marco Polo recited his tales of travel and adventure, where he met large animals, giants, and unique wildlife creatures to Rustichello da Pisa and the latter wrote those stories in the cell where they lived. Later on a book Travels of Marco Polo was released and went very well in the market.

1. Travels of Marco Polo

• This book was written in the prison by Marco Polo and Rustichello da Pisa in the thirteenth century. This book was initially written in Franco, the language of Venice then. When Marco Polo met Genghis Khan, he wanted to know about the travels of Marco Polo, hence he asked Rustichello da Pisa to write a book on it. The book would have turned out to be simple and true, however, Rustichello da Pisa added his little touch of romance and style to it. This is the reason why many people today question the authenticity of the book as they believe the stories mentioned in the book aren’t real and that Rustichello da Pisa had written just to please the audience.

• The book is divided into 4 parts/sub-books. The Part I consists of travels of Marco Polo while going through Middle East & Central Asia to reach China. Part II consists of the tales of China & Kublai Khan, the then ruler of the Mongol Regime, who worked above Genghis Khan. Part III consists of the travels and voyages to reach the coastal regions of India, Sri Lanka and Japan. Part IV consists of the travels and adventures and the sufferings and situations of the Mongol war, as Genghis Khan was the ruler of the Mongol empire.

2. The Description of the World

The Description of the world book, as the name suggest consists of a detailed explanation of the travelling Marco Polo did around the world. He encountered many adventurous creatures, one such fact being, he encountered a large cat with fiery fur and strong eyes, however, that turned out to be a tiger. It also described the experiences of Marco Polo in Asia, and that when Kublai Khan, and Genghis Khan were in ruling & Marco Polo was a part of The Mongolian Empire.

This is a book that has been extracted from the Travels of Marco Polo and constitutes of several beautiful figures and artefacts of Italy. Sicily, being a beautiful island in Italy is mentioned in this book and how the fresh fragrance of flowers in gardens, butterflies sucking nectar, and the humming sound, all are mentioned in this excerpt of Marco Polo that redefines the tale of beauty in Italy. This was when Kublai Khan was ruling the country.

4. Travels in the Land of Serpents and Pearls

This book is again an excerpt of Travels of Marco Polo and consists of the use of fantasized and romantic words and phrases for the Land of serpents and the pearls that could be found in India. It closely states the beautiful parts of travel Marco Polo did in India, which was also known as the land of pearls and consists of many gems, and artefacts in the country with a lot of wealth and beautiful nature. It rejoices the joy of looking at nature and their aesthetics.
