Solution:

0.75 → 75/100​

Find the GCD of 75 and 100, which is 25.

Simplify: (75 ÷ 25)/(100 ÷ 25) = 3/4​

Rounding Decimals

Another method to simplify the decimals is rounding decimals, which can be performed using the following steps:

  • Step 1: Identify the place value to which you want to round (e.g., tenths, hundredths).
  • Step 2: Look at the digit immediately to the right of your rounding place.
  • Step 3: If that digit is 5 or greater, round up. If it is less than 5, round down.

Example: Round 3.14159 to the nearest hundredth.

Solution:

Look at the thousandth place (1 in this case).

Since 1 is less than 5, round down: 3.14159 ≈ 3.14.

Truncating Decimals

  • Step 1: Decide on the number of decimal places to keep.
  • Step 2: Simply cut off the decimal after the desired place without rounding.

Example: Truncate 3.14159 to three decimal places.

Solution:

The truncated value is 3.141.

y = 4.796 + 3.5 – 2.25

y = 8.296 – 2.25

y = 6.046

Example 5: Solve (6.2 – 4.3) × 2.1 + (9.3 ÷ 3.1)

Solution:

Let a = (6.2 – 4.3) × 2.1 + (9.3 ÷ 3.1)

Applying BODMAS rule

a = 1.9 × 2.1 + 3

a = 3.99 + 3

a = 6.99
